The Evolution of Scouting: Reflecting on the History and Legacy of Troop 25

Introduction

Scouting, a global movement that promotes character development and outdoor skills, it has played a significant role in shaping the lives of countless individuals. Troop 25 of St. Stanislaus College Scout Group holds its own rich history within the scouting community, leaving an indelible mark on generations of scouts.

Troop 1, the first scout troop in Guyana, was established in 1909 under the leadership of Sergeant Major Manly. Subsequently, in 1911, Troop 4, the 4th Guiana Boy Scouts- St Stanislaus Troop, was founded by Fr. Alban Robinson S.J., a devoted scout and teacher. The troop initially met at the College's previous location on Brickdam with a passionate group of scouts, including Rupert Craig, Orlando De Freitas, and Joe Fernandes. Troop 25 quickly established itself as an active and enthusiastic unit.

In those early days, Troop 25, participated in various scouting activities despite limited opportunities for camping outside of Georgetown. They earned badges in swimming, boxing, wrestling, and marksmanship. The scouts proudly donned their khaki uniforms with broad-rimmed felt hats, sporting long black woollen socks and sturdy boots. They engaged in swimming challenges at the "Scout Pond," honed their sword-fighting skills in fencing, and ventured into model yacht sailing at the circular park pond near the site of today's Queen's College.

In 1912, Troop 25, enthusiasm and dedication were tested during the Cathedral fire that engulfed Georgetown. As the fire erupted, the scouts, alongside Fr. Robinson, rushed to the scene, assisting the fire engine crew and providing valuable support. Their commendable efforts during this crisis earned them recognition from Lord Robert Baden-Powell himself, who awarded medals of merit to scouts representing each of the three existing troops. Frank Mittelholzer, a member of Troop 25, received this prestigious distinction for his outstanding contributions.

The journey of Troop 25 continued with changes in leadership. Fr. Robinson was transferred to the North West District in 1913, and subsequently, Fr. Besant assumed responsibility for the troop. Under Fr. Besant's guidance, the scouts delved into scientific knowledge related to hulls and sails, fostering their understanding of valuable hobbies. One noteworthy achievement came in 1912 when Frank Mittelholzer built and entered a yacht in the Boy Scouts Handicraft Exhibition in Birmingham, England, ultimately winning first prize in his class.

Unfortunately, in 1914, due to some internal issues within the local scouting movement, Troop 25 was disbanded for a period. However, a new era dawned for the troop on June 29, 1959, when Mr. Harold Wong, S.J., a former scout and teacher, led the resurrection of Troop 25. With the support of Fr. John Hopkinson, S.J., the troop regained its momentum and welcomed new members into its fold. The Ravens, the first patrol of this renewed Troop 25, consisted of D. Abraham, A. Carr, R. Yip, L. Granger, N. Kum, and L. Texeira. On September 18, 1959, they were invested as scouts, marking the official rebirth of Troop 25.

Over the years, Troop 25 thrived under the dedicated leadership of various individuals, including Fr. Darke, who served as Scout Leader. The troop embarked on adventurous camping trips throughout Guyana and the wider Caribbean region, gaining invaluable life experiences and developing lifelong friendships.

Troop 25's rich legacy extends beyond its camping expeditions and outdoor adventures. The troop firmly upholds the principles of the Scout Oath and Law, which guide scouts in their daily lives. The Scout Oath emphasizes duty to God, duty to others, and a commitment to personal growth, while the Scout Law focuses on values such as trustworthiness, loyalty, kindness, and reverence. Troop 25 instills these values in its scouts, shaping them into responsible and compassionate individuals.

Today, Troop 25 of St. Stanislaus College Scout Group continues to uphold the time-honored scouting traditions, instilling in each scout the values of integrity, leadership, and service. The legacy of Troop 25 serves as a testament to the enduring power of scouting to shape young minds, build character, and foster a deep appreciation for the great outdoors.

As Troop 25 looks forward to the future, it carries with it the rich history of its founding members and those who followed in their footsteps. Through scouting, Troop 25 will undoubtedly continue to impact the lives of future generations, embodying the true spirit of the Scout Oath and Law. The legacy of Troop 25, with its dedication, passion, and commitment to scouting, will forever remain a shining example for scouts around the world.
